DeScriptors: Realms Volume 1 is out now!

DeScriptors: Realms Volume 1 presents the diceless DeScriptors RPG in three all-new settings from Matthew Bannock!

This guide begins with a one-page version of the DeScriptors RPG rules, including the latest errata and updates for clarity. Then, three settings are presented, each one complete with an in-world introductory story, setting details, scenarios, and sample characters. All of this provides you with a complete gaming experience for the fast-playing, deeply narrative DeScriptors rules where no character ends a session unchanged!

The settings are:

Into Stormy Seas is a fantasy setting where the realms of faerie creatures touch on the material world, launching characters on adventures filled with whimsy, mystery, or even terror!

Small Gods is about a world not unlike our own, except that the godlings in charge of minor spheres of influence walk among mortals.

Finally, there’s the existential horror of The Keep. The characters find themselves in what’s supposedly a pseudo-imaginary world being televised for entertainment. Only, the characters might be dead, and are locked into this horrifying game show trying to find keys to their memories, or those of other contestants.

DeScriptors: Realms Volume 1 is a complete diceless roleplaying game with three settings. It is also endlessly expendable when you pick up DeScriptors: Definitive Edition, which contains dozens of additional rules, options, variants, more example settings, a detailed guide for storytellers and players, and a full example of play.

Writing: Matthew Bannock. Editing, Layout: Tim Bannock. Cover Art: Rick Hershey. Interior Art: Jesus Blones, Aaron Lee, Rick Hershey / Fat Goblin Games, Dean Spencer

ALIEN The Roleplaying Game Resources

Not too long ago, I posted my version of a GM Screen (AKA ‘Game Mother’ in ALIEN RPG lingo). Since then, the game’s publisher, Free League, has released some better resources themselves, including official print-friendly character sheets, maps, and so on. Of course, being who I am, I saw some opportunities to make some better (form-fill character sheets), and to create some other resources for myself.

Here they are!

Form-fill, print-friendly version of the official character sheet (PDF) – The official Free League character sheet, but with form-fill function.

Cheat sheet / GM screen inserts (PDF) – My GM screen inserts, creating a 3-panel easy-to-use reference for the most often used game rules.

Alien Life Cycle compilation (PDF) – A nicely formatted dump of useful images and information culled from various ALIEN-related wikis and fan resources.

Curse of Strahd as a One-Shot

This article originally appeared on 10/13/2017 @neuronphaser.com. I’m reposting it here inspired by two articles on D&D Beyond by James Haeck: Strahd Must Die Tonight! and Strahd Must Die Again (And Again And Again). Both articles offer fantastic insights complementary to (and greatly improving upon) some of of the same ideas in what I wrote, below.

The idea of boiling down the iconic adventure Curse of Strahd is one that isn’t exactly promising for a few reasons: Strahd works best when he shows up several times, there’s a lot of backstory conveyed through locations and NPCs in Barovia, and there’s several artifacts spread out across the realm that even the odds against Strahd and present their own sidequests. Castle Ravenloft itself is a big place, with hundreds of areas to explore.

But Strahd’s been around for decades, so literally thousands of players have already played through some edition’s version of the adventure surrounding Ravenloft’s key adversary, or they’ve read about his exploits and power-level. The iconic status that makes him the perfect enemy for a party is also what makes him so cool for players to challenge head-to-head over and over again. In fact, that’s a key element of the campaign: Strahd, as a Dark Lord of a domain in Ravenloft, may have no way of being permanently defeated, and so he will play out his torturous, unrequited love story for all of time.

For Halloween, I’ve attempted to boil down Curse of Strahd to its barest elements, and I think I’ve created something that can be finished in 4-6 hours of play while still revealing the story of Strahd. Let’s see what you think!

This whole thing assumes you’re familiar with Curse of Strahd.
