Live to Tell the Tale – An Introduction to Combat Tactics for Dungeons & Dragons Players 1st Edition Review

NOTE! This review was originally posted to neurophaser.com on 5/30/2017, and looks at the First Edition of Live to Tell the Tale – An Introduction to Combat Tactics for Dungeons & Dragons Players. I’m posting it here because I plan to review the Second Edition very, very soon!

Live to Tell the Tale – An Introduction to Combat Tactics for Dungeons & Dragons Players by Keith Ammann — creator of the blog The Monsters Know What They’re Doing — is an in-depth study of the combat system of D&D, as well as the class- and ability-related features of characters and how they can optimize their tactics (rather than their stats) to fight smart and work as a team while still playing the characters they want. This isn’t about building a “perfect” character so much as it’s about how to play smart and have fun doing it with whatever character you roll up, build, or are handed as a pregen. It is a necessary read for understanding the consequences and permutations of the D&D 5th edition rules, and can strengthen the game of every player and DM!

Rating: Content 5/5 and Form 4/5.

Rolled & Told Issue #7 (March 2019) Review

Sporting the comic book format I love oh so much, Rolled & Told returns in March 2019 with two strong adventures, and a few articles that are worth a read, even when they aren’t touching on directly game-able material for you to use in D&D 5th edition. Overall, it’s another solid issue, but it does have a few minor formatting issues that I’d love to see rectified in future issues.

Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set Review

This review originally appeared at dndloremaster.com and is reprinted here with permission.

The Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set takes the idea of the original D&D Starter Set (2014) and applies a pretty slick tie-in to the Stranger Things by including demogorgon minis and an “adventure by Mike Wheeler.” Unfortunately, a few of these conceits end up working against the set. While it still provides everything you need to jump into D&D, the adventure has a couple minor hiccups that compare poorly to the (admittedly exceptional) Lost Mine of Phandelver that anchored the original Starter Set.

The Wizard of Zo Dungeon Masters Guild Review

JVC Parry brings the Dungeon Masters Guild something on a completely other level with the release of The Wizard of Zo. Oozing with flavor, evocatively tied to the Tomb of Annihilation campaign, and filled with cheeky (but not tone-breaking) references to The Wizard of Oz, this adventure also excels at providing fun encounters across the gamut of the three pillars of play. It’s hard to find this level of consistent quality.

Rating: Content 5/5 and Form 4/5
